Some thoughts on the Paranormal

I have a confession to make - I used to be a lot more open to certain elements of the Paranormal than I am now. That sounds kind of weird to say, that I think some of it is nonsense and that some of it isn't, it seems like it should be a kind of 'all or nothing' deal, but then that's where some anti-skeptics go wrong with their touting of the importance of being open minded; they fail to realise that it's possible to be open minded, and then make a decision based on whatever information is currently available to you (i.e. in this life time), and thus reach some form of a temporary conclusion - whether spiritually misguided or not.

It's pretty obvious that we do not know everything about this Universe we live in, other than we inhabit an insignificant dot in the grand scheme of things. And Science is occasionally having to revise it's theories to account for new evidence, as demonstrated by Stephen Hawking's revisions of his own observations about the behaviour of Black Holes. We only have a handful of pieces of the puzzle, and it's up to us to use them as a reference point.

So, do I believe that we can communicate with the dead? No, because all of the 'techniques' that are used can be replicated by a skilled cold reader such as Derren Brown. Do I think it's possible that we occasionally get glimpses into another world? Science has offered up a credible theory that suggests the existence of Parallel Universes, so why not. Do I believe in the Devil? No, because it's origins can clearly be traced back to human mythology.

To loan one of my favourite quotes, "Keeping an open mind is a virtue , but not so much that your brains fall out".
